Setting up a new aquarium
Is this the first time you are keeping fish as a pet? Start with a 10-gallon tank aquarium. For this you need certain other things apart from the tank. You need filter, air pump with an air stone, a heater (if needed), aquarium rocks (3 bags), plants (about 6) and water conditioner.
The tank with 10-gallon water weighs 80 pounds plus all the other equipments it will way even more. Place it on a sturdy table or an aquarium stand.
Once you have collected all the necessary things you can start setting up the aquarium. Rinse the aquarium with warm water. Do not clean it with soap, as that is toxic and harmful for the fish. Place the tank in the location you have selected. Now wash the rocks and put them on the bottom of the tank evenly covering the base completely. The upper part of the rocks can be uneven to give it a natural appearance. Put the plants between the rocks and put a few rocks around it to keep it straight. Keep the taller plants on the backside. Now put the filter in the back of the tank. Filter keeps the water clean and circulating.
Now set the air pump, which puts air in to the water. You need to attach an air stone to the end of the air hose. Place this air stone at the bottom and cover it completely with rocks. Requirement of heater depends on the type of fish you decide to keep. Only some types of fish need it heater. If you use a heater keep it at the back of the tank. Now it is time to fill the tank. Tap water can be used if it is not chlorinated or hard. Keep a saucer while pouring water so that the equipments in the tank or not disturbed. Fill the tank leaving one inch empty from top.
Now plug in the filter, pump and heater. Leave it for three to four days. The equipments will do their work. The filter will clean the water. The heater will warm the water and the pump will put in sufficient oxygen. This period will also prove that the tank is not leaking. Now you can buy fishes. Some types of fishes for beginners are Gold fish, Molies, Tetras, Guppies etc. When you bring your fish home they will be in a plastic bag. Place this plastic bag in the aquarium for 15 –20 minutes so that the temperature becomes the same. Now you can transfer the fish to the tank.
Finally your new aquarium is ready! Now sit and enjoy it.
